BlackBerry Security Basics , BlackBerry Encryption

By

Talking about BlackBerry Security , the first thing we have to consider is our password . Once set you can continue with more security options depending on your Security requirements . If later you forgot or just type it incorrectly you will be prompted to type “blackberry” before you are able to continue . Remember that if you exceed your attempts (depending of your password attempts settings ) all the data stored on your BlackBery device will be deleted and if not Back Upped before , it will be lost forever . Very professional, BlackBery cares about your data and that is really charming, isn’t it?

Once a friend of mine decided to sell his BlackBerry 9700 Bold device , he was about to  buy the new BlackBerry Bold 9780 . He just loved the 5 MP, 2592x1944 pixels, camera . And the issue with the emails and all other security stuff appeared . First things first as I said . All data stored on the BlackBerry 9700 Bold was back upped and stored , than deleted . The process prolonged additionally because he had his encryption turned ON . It tooked around an hour .

Additionally he used an email address associated with the device and in order to disassociate the account from the current he had to contact his service provider . After all this procedure finished he grabbed the  BlackBerry Bold 9780 and the email was activated on it . The data back upped before was stored on the PC and later transferred on to the new device . So if you have similar situation consider these steps.

 What about the BlackBerry encryption?

Well, when your encryption for device memory is turned on, a private key is used in order the data to be encrypted. When you want to access your data the same key is used to decrypt it. The contacts as well as the data can be encrypted too. Unfortunately if encrypted the caller ID is not visible in incoming calls. The file encryption in BlackBerry devices is designed to protect your personal data. You are able to encrypt the files on the memory card and the files in your BlackBerry device memory by using an encryption key or by using your device password or even using both options. Remember that if you use the encryption key generated by your device, this file can be accessed only in your device, it will not be readable on another device, a card reader or pc. Only those files encrypted solely by a device password are accessible and readable elsewhere (as long as you remember the pass of course).

The next level of protection by encryption is so called Two-Factor Protection . Generally its used to encrypt the encryption keys on your device by using a certificate . That task can be performed only if  its used to encrypt the encryption keys on your device by using a certificate . That task can be performed only if you use BlackBerry Enterprise Server . The encryption data service on your Blackberry device must me turned ON . Than you are able to use a smart card certificate in order to encrypt the encryption keys on your device . There encryption keys are used in those corporation , mainly a BlackBerry Enterprise Server customers , that uses to transfer data between BlackBerry Enterprise Server , BlackBerry Desktop Redirector and BlackBerry devices of their employees . BlackBerry advices a new key to be generated every 2 weeks but depending on the security level it might be updated daily.
